Even if most tourists regard Kalamaki as a separate town from Greece's capital city of Athens, it's in fact just a suburb of the city and incidentally, home to the largest marinas in the country. Due to its position next to the Greek capital it's an excellent starting point to your yacht charter vacation.
Located to the southeast of the city's harbor, Kalamaki can be found on what is generally considered to be local territory so not a tourist destination in the true sense of the word. But with the construction of the marina, the locals have had to relinquish their territory to large bands of summer visitors who come here attracted by the mooring and sailing possibilities.
On the downside Kalamaki in yacht charter Athens was not built with the tourist in mind so it's not a proper summer resort but more a Greek neighborhood. On the upside, transfer times from the Athens International Airport are always under 1 hour.
The look of the region is that of tall apartment buildings divided by a maze of narrow, meandering streets where a tourist can easily get lost. However, walking along these same streets one can catch a glimpse of the real Greek life but also some landmarks such as museums, ruins and other historical buildings.
Shopping here is not really an expensive experience, but then again this isn't one of the city's high priced neighborhoods. There are small family shops that will cater to your basic needs but for those looking for a real shopping experience you'll need to catch a taxi downtown.
The marina also generated the appearance of several eating venues in its vicinity to satisfy the hungry yacht charter masses. There are small and inexpensive, mostly bars that also serve snacks. Those who wish a gourmet dinner, are better off travelling to one of the city's hot spots such as Plaka where a number of restaurants are located. If you however decide to have a quick bite nearby, be sure that you stick to the places where the locals hang out as these will most likely have the best prices for the best quality. Otherwise you might be stepping into a tourist trap.
If you want to have some fun after dark, we don't advise you to go near the marina in search of entertainment. Rather, get your friends together and head to the old part of town which is full of clubs, bars and pubs that cater to every need.
